VETERINARY SURGERY

Overview

All Creatures Veterinary Hospital provides many animal related services. One area of service that we are proud of is our wide variety of surgical procedures; we utilize a co2 laser, which will seal small blood vessels to reduce bleeding during surgery, the co2 laser also seals nerve ending to reduce pain during surgery also decreasing the incidence of infection post operatively.

In most cases with less bleeding and less pain makes recovery time faster. One of the most common surgical procedures we perform is Neutering. The generic term for sterilization. We spay female dogs and cats. A complete ovarian hysterectomy is performed in layman’s terms it means the removal of the ovaries and uterus. If you are not going to breed your female dog or cat you should consider this procedure for your animal. It will promote better health and reduce the incidence of a pyometria (uterine infection). Which if undiagnosed can become life threatening to your pet. In male dogs or cats, this procedure is called castration (removal of gonads) this procedure can decrease aggressive behavior and the incidence of cancer, in some cases reducing the urge in both dogs and cats to roam. Again promoting better health for your friend.

We provide exceptional care to all of our patients and recommend that surgical patients have pre-operative blood work, the Dr. will examine the pet before surgery, check all test results prior to the start of surgery. When surgery is complete, the patient is placed in recovery area for observation and or if needed, can be placed in intensive care unit that provides oxygen therapy and a warmed environment during the recovery phase.

Why to spay your female dog

Did you know that a female dog has a heat cycle (estrus) twice a year? Yep, it’s the bloody truth. This results in a higher incidence for your dog to become pregnant. Every six months a canine heat cycle starts and lasts three weeks. Another reason Veterinarian’s recommend spaying because of the incidence of Pyometra. Pyometra is an infection in the uterus. At this point the surgery is no longer elected; it becomes an immediate surgical emergency.

Why to castrate your male dog

In some cases surgically excising the gonads can have a slight impact on aggression. Also reducing the marking behavior or (the fire hydrant theory). The most common and recommend reason for castrating your dog is the greatly reduced incidence of Prostate cancer.
